Protoje :: The 8 Year Affair

protoje1Burgeoning reggae artiste Protoje recently released his second full length album entitled The 8 Year Affair (2013), a follow-up to his first album entitled Seven Year Itch (2011). Protoje came onto the scene back in 2011 with his first collection of songs including ones like “Rasta Love,” “Dread” and his home island anthem “JA.” Now he blesses us with another album continuing his journey along the reggae road with his band Indiggnation.

LL Cool J :: Chuck D :: Travis Barker :: Tom Morello :: Z-Trip

By far the best performance of the night at the 55th Grammy awards show. The energy was so high with this group of 5. I’m guessing LL Cool J is the only person that could get Chuck D to go to the Grammys! LOL! I was so very excited to have all my favorites on one stage and for them to do a tribute to MCA was sooo dope!

What more could you ask for in Chuck D, Travis BarkerTom MorelloDj Z-Trip, & LL Cool J

Happy Independence, Jamaica!

August 6th, 2012 marks Jamaica’s 50th birthday as they gained their Independence from the British monarchy on this day back in 1962. As you can imagine, the whole island is filled with joy and celebration. (It also helps the celebratory mood when Jamaica has managed to bring home 2 gold, 1 silver and a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympic Track & Field events!) Continue reading

Happy Emancipation Day Jamaica!

August 1st, 2012 marks the 174th anniversary of Jamaica’s Emancipation even though the notion of freedom from slavery had originally been introduced in 1834. Indeed the process of becoming fully free took some time but was nevertheless necessary. Some would still argue that although the act of slavery had been abolished, the foothold on the “inferior” by the “superior” was ever present. The real battle of oppression had only just begun and so did the tactics to keep ex-slaves enslaved become a mission of the oppressors. But the spirit and hunger of the formerly enslaved was overwhelming and they would eventually find true freedom not only through rebellion but through education. Throwback Thursday :: Freddie McGregor

As I sifted through my crates of old vinyl, cassettes, and cd’s one day I looked for anything that would strike up a vibe to match the mood I was in. I wanted to listen to some “chune”, some real good reggae music. Nothing too laid back and not too jumpy. Then as riddims started playing in my head I looked up and thought to just put one of my iTunes playlists on shuffle. The first song that played was an oldie but goodie from Freddie McGregor, O.D. (Order of Distinction) my inspiration for this week’s Throwback Thursday. Continue reading
